First Energy-Efficient Tyre
Summary
At MINExpo 2024, Michelin introduced the Michelin XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY™, the first energy-efficient tire for the mining industry. This tire reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by improving fuel efficiency by 3.6% compared to older models. Each tire can save 5,300 gallons of fuel and reduce costs by $24,000 annually. For a fleet of 50 trucks, this means savings of $1.2 million and 2,600 fewer tons of CO2 emissions per year. Michelin’s innovation focuses on sustainability and lower rolling resistance, helping trucks use less fuel and operate more efficiently.
Michelin introduces the industry’s first energy-efficient tyre
At MINExpo 2024, Michelin introduced the Michelin XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY™, the first energy-efficient tire in the mining industry. This innovative tire reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for mining vehicles. It features an optimized tread and a new energy-saving rubber compound, boosting fuel efficiency by up to 3.6% compared to previous models.
For each truck, the Michelin XDR 4 SPEED ENERGY™ tire saves about 5300 gallons of fuel annually, equating to US$24,000 in cost savings. When applied to a fleet of 50 trucks, these savings amount to nearly US$1.2 million per year and cut down CO2 emissions by 2600 tons. This advancement makes the tire a significant asset for mining operations focused on reducing costs and environmental impact.
Lisa Hickey, Michelin’s Sustainability Lead for Mining, emphasizes the tire’s reduced rolling resistance. By minimizing the forces that slow vehicles, the tire conserves energy and decreases heat loss. Consequently, trucks use less fuel and operate more sustainably.
With 135 years of experience, Michelin remains a leader in mining innovation. The company is committed to creating solutions that enhance safety, productivity, and sustainability.
